Pro tip: The more you understand about our process, the better your results will be. Let’s dive in! 💪
📋 The Golden Rule: Print-Ready Art Files
This is the most important part of the entire process. Bad art files = disappointing prints. Good art files = amazing results that’ll make your customers smile (or laugh, depending on the design). Let’s break it down.
Why Print-Ready Art Matters
When you send us artwork, we’re not just printing a picture—we’re transferring your vision onto fabric using specialized equipment. If your file isn’t prepared correctly, we might end up with blurry designs, colors that don’t match your expectations, or prints that fall apart after a few washes. Nobody wants that!
Understanding the difference between vector and raster files is crucial for print quality.
Vector vs. Raster: What’s the Difference?
Think of it this way: Vector files are made of mathematical paths and points—they’re like instructions that can scale to any size without losing quality. Raster files are made of pixels (tiny dots), so when you enlarge them, they become blurry and pixelated.
Vector Files (The Winners)
Made of paths and points. Scale to any size. Always sharp. Perfect for logos, text, and illustrations.
Raster Files (The Struggle)
Made of pixels. Lose quality when enlarged. Best for photos only. Not ideal for most apparel printing.
File Formats We Love
.AI (Adobe Illustrator)
The gold standard. Fully editable vector format.
.EPS (Encapsulated PostScript)
Universal vector format. Works with most design software.
.PDF (Portable Document Format)
Great for vector artwork. Maintains quality across platforms.
High-Res PNG or JPG (300 DPI)
If vector files aren’t available, high-resolution raster files work for photos.
💡 Pro Tip: If you don’t have a vector file, don’t worry! Our design team can help you create one or convert your existing artwork. Just give us a call at (319) 271-8166.
File Specifications Checklist
Resolution: 300 DPI (dots per inch) minimum for crisp, professional prints.
Color Mode: CMYK for print (not RGB, which is for screens).
Size: Provide artwork at the actual size it will print on the garment.
Bleed & Margins: Include 0.125″ bleed and 0.25″ margins to avoid cutting off important
elements.
👕 Pick Your Canvas: Apparel Styles & Materials
The type of shirt (or other apparel) you choose affects not only the look and feel of your final product but also which decoration methods work best. Let’s explore your options.
Understanding Fabric Materials
100% Cotton
The Classic. Soft, breathable, and comfortable. Cotton is the go-to choice for everyday wear. It works beautifully with screen printing and embroidery. However, cotton can shrink slightly in the wash, so we recommend pre-shrinking or sizing up slightly. Great for casual events, team wear, and promotional items.
100% Polyester
The Performance Player. Lightweight, moisture-wicking, and durable. Polyester is perfect for athletic wear, sports teams, and outdoor events. It’s also the ideal choice for sublimation printing (which creates vibrant, permanent prints). Polyester doesn’t shrink like cotton, so sizing is more consistent.
Cotton-Polyester Blends (CVC, Tri-Blend)
The Best of Both Worlds. Blends combine the softness of cotton with the durability and performance of polyester. They’re incredibly popular because they feel premium, resist shrinkage, and work with most decoration methods. CVC (60% cotton, 40% polyester) and tri-blends are our customers’ favorites for high-end apparel.
💡 Pro Tip: Not sure which material is right for you? Consider your use case: casual wear = cotton, athletic/performance = polyester, premium/upscale = blends.
Beyond T-Shirts
We don’t just print on t-shirts! We can decorate:
- Hoodies & Sweatshirts
- Hats & Caps
- Polos & Dress Shirts
- Jackets & Vests
- Tote Bags & Aprons
- Towels & Blankets
- And more!
💰 The Magic of Numbers: Volume Pricing
Here’s a simple truth: the more you order, the less you pay per item. This is because setup costs get spread across more units. Let’s break it down.
See how ordering in bulk dramatically reduces your per-unit cost.
How Volume Pricing Works
Every printing job has a setup cost—preparing screens, setting up equipment, color matching, etc. When you order just 10 shirts, that setup cost is divided by 10. When you order 100 shirts, it’s divided by 100. The setup cost per shirt drops significantly!
If setup costs $50 and you order 10 shirts, that’s $5 per shirt in setup costs. Order 100 shirts? That’s only $0.50 per shirt in setup costs!
Typical Volume Tiers
While exact pricing depends on your specific order, here’s a general breakdown:
| Order Quantity | Price Per Item (Approximate) | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 1-12 items | Higher per-unit cost | Small gifts, samples, personal use |
| 13-50 items | Moderate savings | Small events, team wear, startups |
| 51-100 items | Good savings | Corporate events, larger teams, fundraisers |
| 100+ items | Best pricing | Bulk orders, retail, large events |
💡 Pro Tip: Even if you don’t need 100 shirts right now, consider ordering a few extra. The per-unit savings often make it worth it, and you’ll have inventory for future events!
🎨 Decoration Station: Which Method is Right for You?
1. Screen Printing 🖨️
The Classic. The GOAT. The One Everyone Knows. Screen printing is the most popular method for a reason: it’s durable, vibrant, and cost-effective for bulk orders.
Vibrant Colors
Bold, bright inks that stand out and last for years.
Durability
Prints withstand hundreds of washes without fading or cracking.
Cost-Effective
Best value for bulk orders (50+ items).
Best for: Logos, text, simple designs, bulk orders, events, team wear.
Not ideal for: Photorealistic images, unlimited colors, very small orders.
2. Embroidery 🧵
The Classy Cousin. Embroidery adds texture, dimension, and a premium look. It’s perfect for polos, hats, jackets, and anything that needs to look professional.
Premium Look
Textured, professional appearance perfect for corporate wear.
Ultra-Durable
Thread-based designs last for years of wear and washing.
Versatile
Works on almost any fabric, including leather and canvas.
Best for: Polos, hats, jackets, corporate apparel, premium items.
Not ideal for: Photorealistic images, very detailed designs, budget-conscious orders.
3. Heat Press (Vinyl & Transfer) 🔥
The DIY-Friendly Option. Heat press uses vinyl cutouts or transfer paper applied with heat. It’s great for small orders, custom names, and personalized items.
Quick Turnaround
Perfect for rush orders and last-minute requests.
Personalization
Ideal for adding names, numbers, and custom touches.
Affordable
Great for small orders where setup costs matter less.
Best for: Polos, hats, jackets, corporate apparel, premium items.
Not ideal for: Large bulk orders, complex multi-color designs, long-term durability.
4. Sublimation 🌈
The Vibrant Dream. Sublimation fuses dye directly into polyester fabric, creating permanent, all-over color prints with unlimited color options. The results are stunning and feel weightless on the fabric.
Unlimited Colors
Photorealistic prints with gradients and complex designs.
Soft Feel
Prints feel like part of the fabric, not on top of it.
Permanent
Dye becomes part of the fabric. Won’t fade, crack, or peel.
Best for: Polyester apparel, photorealistic images, all-over prints, mugs, mousepads.
Not ideal for: Cotton (sublimation only works on polyester), dark fabrics, budget orders.
5. DTF (Direct-to-Film) 🎬
The New Kid on the Block. DTF is the newest and most versatile printing method. It prints designs onto a special film, then transfers them to fabric using heat. It works on any fabric color and offers incredible detail.
High Detail
Photorealistic prints with fine details and gradients.
Universal
Works on cotton, polyester, blends, light, and dark fabrics.
Durable
Excellent durability when properly cured. Resists cracking and fading.
Best for: Complex designs, dark garments, any fabric type, professional-grade apparel.
Not ideal for: Very small orders (higher per-unit cost), budget-conscious customers.
Decoration Methods Comparison
| Method | Best For | Durability | Cost (Bulk) | Setup Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Screen Printing | Logos, text, simple designs | Excellent | Low | Medium |
| Embroidery | Corporate, premium wear | Excellent | High | Medium |
| Heat Press | Small orders, personalization | Good | Low | Low |
| Sublimation | Polyester, photorealistic | Excellent | Medium | Low |
| DTF | Complex designs, any fabric | Excellent | Medium | Low |
🎯 Pro Tips Before You Order
Turnaround Times
Different decoration methods have different turnaround times. Screen printing typically takes 5-7 business days for setup and production. Embroidery can take 7-10 business days depending on complexity. Heat press is fastest at 2-3 business days. DTF and sublimation are usually 3-5 business days. Always ask about rush options if you’re on a tight deadline!
Shipping vs. Pickup
We offer both shipping and local pickup at our Tiffin, Iowa location. Pickup is faster and saves on shipping costs. If you’re ordering a large quantity, pickup might be your best option. For smaller orders or if you’re out of state, we ship nationwide with competitive rates.
Measure Twice, Print Once
Before you order, double-check your sizes! We recommend ordering a sample or test print first, especially if you’re unsure about fit or design placement. It’s much cheaper to adjust before printing 100 shirts than to discover the sizing is off after production.
Color Matching
Colors on your screen might not match the final print exactly. This is normal! Different fabrics absorb ink differently, and lighting affects how colors appear. We always try to match your vision as closely as possible, but we recommend discussing color expectations during the quoting process.
Design Placement
Think about where your design will go on the garment. Front chest? Back? Sleeve? Different placements have different costs and considerations. For example, back prints are larger and more visible, while chest prints are more subtle. We’ll help you decide what works best for your vision.
Wash Care Instructions
To keep your custom apparel looking great, we recommend:
- Wash in cold water (hot water can fade prints)
- Turn shirts inside out before washing
- Use gentle detergent
- Avoid bleach
- Dry on low heat or air dry
💡 Pro Tip: Most of our prints are designed to last hundreds of washes when cared for properly. Your custom apparel is an investment—treat it right!
